Sports Club and Team Embroidery: Crests on Polos and Caps
Custom Uniforms team · · 5 min read
Sports clubs and teams usually embroider their crest and club name on the items that are worn off the field or kept for years: polos, caps and kit bags. Match jerseys with large numbers and sponsor panels are usually printed by a specialist printer instead, because the fabric is thin and stretchy and the designs are large. Knowing which item gets which treatment saves money and gives the club a look that lasts.
Where embroidery suits a club kit
Embroidery stitches the crest into the fabric with thread. It does not crack or peel, and it looks smart on garments that are washed often but do not stretch much. For most clubs, that means:
- Polo t-shirts for officials, coaches, team managers and players travelling to matches.
- Caps for cricket, football and athletics clubs, for training and for supporters.
- Kit bags and backpacks with the crest and sometimes the player’s name.
- Club uniforms for staff, such as ground staff or the front desk at a sports academy.
These are the pieces players and members wear in public and keep beyond a single season, so the crest needs to look right and stay right.
Where another method usually fits better
Some parts of a sports kit are not a natural fit for embroidery:
- Large back numbers and names on match jerseys. A big block of stitches on thin, breathable jersey fabric is heavy, can feel stiff against the skin and may pucker.
- Full-colour sponsor logos with gradients, photographs or very fine text.
- Sublimated all-over designs, where the pattern is part of the fabric itself.
We do embroidery only, so for these items a club would use a printer or a sportswear maker. A common arrangement is to have the jerseys printed elsewhere and send the polos, caps and bags to us for the crest. Our comparison of embroidery vs printing on uniforms explains the trade-offs in more detail.
Getting the crest ready for thread
Club crests are often designed for print or social media, with shields, small mottos, founding years in tiny figures and fine outlines. Before embroidery, review it with these points in mind:
- Small text. A motto on a ribbon under the shield may become unreadable at chest size. Consider dropping it, or keeping it only on larger placements such as the upper back of a polo.
- Fine lines and gradients. Thin outlines and shading do not translate well into thread. Bold shapes and solid colours do.
- Number of colours. Each colour is a separate thread. A crest with a modest number of solid colours stitches more cleanly at small sizes.
- Shape for caps. Tall crests can be cramped on a cap front. A wider version, or the crest with the club initials beside it, often fits better.
Send the clearest file you have. A vector file is ideal, but a clear PNG, JPG or PDF is enough to start. Our guide on how to prepare your logo for embroidery covers sizes for chest, sleeve and cap.
Common positions on team items
| Item | Position | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Polo | Left chest | Club crest |
| Polo | Right chest or sleeve | Player or official’s name, role, or season |
| Polo | Upper back | Club name in lettering |
| Cap | Front centre | Crest or club initials |
| Cap | Side or back | Year, team name or short text |
| Kit bag | Front panel | Crest, with or without player name |
Decide positions once and keep them for every season. A team photo where half the polos have the crest on the left and half on the right looks untidy.
Names on team items
Individual names make kit bags and polos easy to tell apart in a changing room. If you want names:
- Prepare a names sheet with one row per item, showing the name exactly as it should be stitched, the item and the size.
- Decide whether names use first names, surnames or initials, and keep it consistent.
- Ask each player to check their own spelling before the sheet is sent.
For coaches and officials, a role under the name, such as Coach or Manager, is often more useful than the full name.
Using items the club already has
Many clubs already have polos or caps from a local supplier or a sports shop, or buy them as the season starts. You can send those to us for embroidery. Count everything by type, colour and size, mark where each design goes, and pack the list inside the parcel. We check the count when the parcel arrives and confirm before stitching. The steps are covered in our guide on how to send your own garments for embroidery.
When choosing items, look for pique polos rather than very thin, stretchy fabric, and caps with a structured front panel. Avoid bags where the only flat area is heavily padded or covered by a pocket.
Planning around the season
Clubs usually need items before a tournament, the start of the season or an annual day. Work backwards from that date:
- Fix the crest version and positions early, ideally before players start ordering their own kit.
- Collect sizes and names with a firm deadline, and order a few spares for late signings.
- Agree who approves the sample photo: the secretary, captain or coach, not a full committee meeting.
- Allow time for the garments to reach us and come back, as well as the embroidery time we confirm in the quote.
For school teams, the planning is similar but tied to the school calendar. Our school PT and sports uniform guide covers the garments themselves.
Keeping the kit consistent
Teams reorder every season for new players and replacements. Ask for the crest file to be kept on record, and note the thread colours, sizes and positions you approved. A new player’s polo then matches the rest of the squad, even if it is stitched a year later.
How we handle club and team embroidery
Embroidery is one of our main services, running now at our unit in Konni, Pathanamthitta, Kerala. We embroider club crests, team names, player names and short text on polo t-shirts, caps, bags and uniforms, including items your club sends us, and small quantities are accepted. We digitise your crest once and keep it on record for repeat orders, with any one-time digitising charge confirmed in the quote. We stitch a sample and send a photo on WhatsApp for approval before the full quantity, then return the order by courier across India, with the charge in the quote, or you collect it from the unit.
To get your crest on this season’s polos and caps, read about our embroidery service, or send the crest, item counts and your date on WhatsApp or through our quote form.
