CBSE School Uniforms in the UAE and Gulf: Ordering from India
Custom Uniforms team · · 4 min read
CBSE and other Indian-curriculum schools in the UAE and the wider Gulf can order made-to-order uniforms from India, and many find it a good fit because the garments, styles and size ranges are familiar. The key is timing: with the academic year usually starting in April, conversations with a manufacturer should begin between November and January. This guide covers what to plan, in what order, and what to check.
Why Gulf schools look to India for uniforms
Indian-curriculum schools in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Riyadh and other cities often have uniforms that follow patterns common in India: shirts with a badge, trousers and shorts, skirts and pinafores for younger girls, salwar sets for older girls in some schools, PT kits and house t-shirts. A manufacturer in India already makes these garments every season and understands the size range from KG to Class 12.
What changes for a Gulf school is the distance. Samples, approvals and shipping all need more time, and import charges need planning.
A timeline for an April start
Working backwards from the first day of the new academic year:
- November to January: share your uniform list, colours, badge artwork and an estimate of quantities. Request quotes and agree on a manufacturer.
- Sample stage: a sample of each key garment is made in your fabric and colour and couriered to the school. Check it, gather comments and approve.
- Size collection: collect sizes from existing students and estimate for new admissions. This often takes longer than expected.
- Production: bulk cutting and stitching begins after the sample and size list are approved.
- Shipping and clearance: by air courier or sea freight, followed by customs clearance at your end.
- Distribution: sorting by class and size before handing out.
If your school starts in August or September instead, the same steps apply, with talks starting between April and June.
Getting the uniform list right
Many schools find that the uniform list in the prospectus is not detailed enough for a manufacturer. Before you request quotes, write down each garment with:
- Fabric colour, with a physical reference if possible.
- Style details, such as collar type, pocket, pleats, and whether skirts have an adjustable waist.
- Badge or logo position, size and thread colours.
- Which classes wear which garment, so quantities can be estimated.
- Any difference between summer and winter wear.
House t-shirts deserve their own attention, since four or more colours must stay distinct and consistent. Our guide to a school house t-shirt colour system explains how to set them up.
Fabric for a hot climate
Students in the Gulf spend time outdoors in strong heat and indoors in air-conditioned classrooms. Breathable fabrics in lighter weights are a common choice for shirts, while trousers and skirts need enough body to hold their shape through daily wear and frequent washing.
Ask your manufacturer for fabric swatches early, and check how colours look in daylight. A white shirt fabric that looks bright in a showroom can look different next to the old stock.
Collecting sizes from Gulf campuses
Size collection is the step most likely to delay the order. A few methods help:
- Use a sample size set so parents or class teachers can try sizes rather than guess.
- Collect sizes by class, with a simple form per section.
- Order a small buffer of common sizes for new admissions.
- Note any students who need special sizes separately.
Our step-by-step guide to collecting student uniform sizes covers this in more detail.
Import charges and paperwork
Import duties, VAT and clearance charges in the UAE and other Gulf countries are paid by the buyer unless agreed otherwise in writing. Check the current requirements with your customs broker or freight forwarder before you confirm the order, and agree who at the school will deal with them when the shipment arrives.
India is one and a half hours ahead of the UAE and Oman and two and a half hours ahead of Saudi Arabia, so most questions can be handled within the same school day.
How we make school uniforms for Gulf schools
At our unit in Konni, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, we make school shirts, trousers, shorts, skirts, pinafores, salwar sets, PT and sports uniforms and house t-shirts to order, in your colours and fabrics, with badge and logo embroidery. A sample can be made before bulk production, and any sample charge is stated in the quote. Minimum order and lead time are confirmed in each quote, and shipping is itemised. Payment is by bank transfer on terms agreed before confirmation, and we keep fabric, colour, style and size records so the next year’s order matches.
Misharen is a registered business and a registered brand in the UAE and the UK.
