Scrubs Manufacturer in India for US Buyers: What to Know
Custom Uniforms team · · 4 min read
Working with a scrubs manufacturer in India can give US buyers made-to-order scrubs in their own colours, fabrics and labels, without being limited to what is in a catalogue. It works well when you plan for US sizing, approve a sample, understand who pays tariffs and duties, and agree shipping terms up front. This guide covers each of those for clinics, practices and scrubs brands.
Who this suits
US buyers who order from India tend to fall into two groups. The first is organisations that wear the scrubs: dental and veterinary practices, outpatient clinics, labs and care providers that want a specific colour, a logo and a consistent look across staff. The second is businesses that sell scrubs: new and growing scrubs brands, uniform retailers and online stores that want garments sewn under their own brand.
Both groups usually want the same things from a manufacturer: control over fabric and fit, a sample before bulk, and the ability to reorder the same garment months later.
What we make for US buyers, and what we do not
For buyers in the US we make scrubs, lab coats, staff uniforms and school uniforms. Colours, fabrics and sizes are custom, and logos and names can be embroidered.
We do not supply gowns to the US. Gowns intended as medical devices are regulated by the FDA, and that is outside what we offer for US orders. If your programme needs gowns, source them separately from a supplier set up for that.
Getting US sizing right
US scrubs sizing differs from Indian sizing in a few ways that matter on a bulk order:
- Size labels: US buyers usually expect XS to 3XL or beyond, sometimes with petite and tall options. Agree what each label means in measurements.
- Units: Share your size chart in inches, and ask the manufacturer to confirm the finished garment measurements for each size.
- Fit: Decide whether tops are boxy or tapered, and whether trousers have a drawstring, elastic waist or both. Jogger and straight-leg styles fit differently.
- Grading: Ask how measurements step up between sizes, so a 2XL is not just a longer medium.
If you already sell or wear a style that fits well, send it as a reference. A physical garment removes a lot of guesswork.
Samples and approval at a distance
With a supplier on the other side of the world, the sample is your main quality checkpoint. Ask for it in your chosen fabric, colour and embroidery, and in the size most of your staff or customers wear. If fit matters across a wide range, a second sample in a larger size is worth the extra courier cost.
When it arrives, wear it for a shift, wash it several times at your usual settings, and check the colour in daylight. Send all comments together in writing, with photos. Our guide on why sample approval matters has a full checklist.
Tariffs, duties and import charges
Tariffs, duties and import charges are the buyer’s responsibility unless something different is agreed in writing. Tariff treatment for apparel imported into the US changes from time to time, and it can depend on the product, fibre content and origin. Check the current position with a licensed customs broker before you confirm an order, and ask them which documents they need from the manufacturer.
It also helps to agree the delivery terms clearly. Our explainer on DAP vs DDP sets out who handles clearance and who pays under each.
Shipping options
Depending on quantity and your date, orders go by air courier or sea freight. Air suits samples, small runs and urgent reorders. Sea freight can suit larger orders where the date allows. The shipping cost is itemised in the quotation so you can compare it with your other costs.
Plan for time zones. India is nine and a half to thirteen and a half hours ahead of the US, depending on your time zone and the season. A message sent at the end of a US working day often reaches us at the start of ours, which means simple questions can be answered overnight from your point of view.
Labels for scrubs brands
If you are building a brand, labels are part of the product. Brand labels, size labels and care labels can be sewn in during production. The content of care labels, including fibre content and care instructions, is the brand owner’s responsibility, so confirm what your market requires before you send artwork. Our private label service explains how we handle your labels.
How we work with US buyers
Scrubs, lab coats and staff uniforms are made to order at our unit in Konni, Pathanamthitta, Kerala. A sample can be made before bulk production, and any sample charge is stated in the quote. Small bulk orders are welcome; minimum order and lead time are confirmed in each quote. Payment is by bank transfer on terms agreed before confirmation. We keep records of fabric, colour, style and size breakdown so that reorders match.
