School Uniform Order Timeline for Kerala: When to Start

Custom Uniforms team · · 4 min read

School uniforms for primary, middle and senior students

Kerala schools reopen in June, so the safest time to place a uniform order is between December and March. That leaves room to review designs, approve a sample, collect sizes and still have uniforms delivered and distributed before the first day. Schools that start talking to a supplier in April or May are competing with everyone else who left it late.

Why June reopening means a winter order

A school uniform order is not just stitching. Before production can start, the school has to agree the design, choose fabric and colours, approve a sample and send a size list. After production, uniforms need to be checked, packed by class or by student, and handed out to parents. Each of those steps depends on people inside the school, and school offices are busiest in March and April with exams, results and admissions.

Placing the order earlier moves the decisions into quieter months. It also gives you room to fix problems, such as a shade that looks wrong in daylight or a size list with gaps, without pressure.

A month-by-month school uniform timeline for Kerala

When What to do
October to November Review the current uniform. Collect complaints from parents and teachers. Decide whether anything should change.
December Finalise designs, colours and fabric. Request quotes from suppliers with a clear specification.
January Approve a sample of each garment. Confirm the quote, payment terms and delivery date in writing.
February Collect sizes for continuing students. Estimate numbers for new admissions. Send the size breakdown.
March Bulk production. Plan how uniforms will be packed and distributed.
April to May Delivery, checking and distribution to parents. Place a small top-up order for late admissions.
June School reopens with uniforms in hand.

Lead times vary by supplier and order size, so treat this as a planning frame rather than a fixed schedule. Your supplier should confirm the lead time in the quote.

October to December: decide what you want

The first decisions are about design. Will this year’s uniform be identical to last year’s, or is something changing, such as a new skirt style, a different shade of shirt, or a new house t-shirt colour? If nothing changes, the order is much simpler, because the supplier can repeat a known specification.

Write down the garments needed for each section: pre-primary, primary, middle and high school often have different items. Then request quotes with the same information sent to every supplier, so you can compare them fairly.

January: approve a sample

Ask for a sample of every garment that is new or changed. Check colour in daylight, fabric feel, stitching, fit and any embroidery or badge. Our school uniform sample checklist lists what to look for item by item. Approving the sample in January gives you time for a second sample if something needs fixing.

February: collect sizes

Size collection is the step that slips most often. Send measurement forms home with a clear return date, or arrange size trials in class with sample garments. Collect sizes for continuing students first; new admissions can be estimated from previous years and topped up later. Our guide on how to collect student uniform sizes gives a step-by-step method.

March to May: production and distribution

Once sizes are confirmed, production can start. Use this time to plan distribution. Will uniforms be packed by student, by class or by size? Will parents collect from school or from a uniform shop? Decide who checks each delivery against the order before it is handed out.

Keep a small stock of common sizes for students who join late or whose sizes were wrong.

What happens if you order late

Ordering in April or May is still possible, but choices shrink. There may not be time for a second sample, specific fabrics may be harder to source in the quantity needed, and delivery may arrive close to reopening. If you are late, keep the design unchanged from last year, send a complete size list in one go, and agree the delivery date before confirming.

Other school calendars

Schools elsewhere follow different calendars. Indian-curriculum schools in the Gulf usually start their year in April, so talks should begin between November and January. Schools that start in August or September should begin talks between April and June. Our international page explains how we work with schools outside India.

How we handle school uniform orders

We make school shirts, trousers, shorts, skirts, pinafores, salwar sets, PT uniforms and house t-shirts to order at our unit in Konni, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, with delivery across India. You choose colours, fabrics and sizes, and we can embroider your school badge. A sample can be made before bulk production, with any sample charge stated in the quote. Minimum order and lead time are confirmed in each quote, and we keep records of fabric, colour, style and size breakdown so next year’s order and mid-year top-ups match.
