Girls School Uniform Options: Pinafores, Skirts or Salwar
Custom Uniforms team · · 4 min read
The three common girls school uniform options in India are the pinafore, the skirt with a shirt, and the salwar kameez set. Pinafores suit younger children, skirts are common in the middle and senior years, and salwar sets are preferred by many families and schools for older girls. Many schools now offer more than one option, and the right choice depends on age, activity, climate and what your community is comfortable with.
The pinafore
A pinafore is a sleeveless dress worn over a shirt. It is usually the first uniform a girl wears at school, from pre-primary through the early primary classes.
Why schools choose it: It is a single piece over a shirt, so it is easy for small children to put on, and there is no waistband to slip or tuck. It looks neat in class photographs and is forgiving as children grow, because it hangs from the shoulders.
What to watch for: Fastenings matter. Buttons on the shoulder or side are easier for young children than a back zip. Check that straps do not slip off narrow shoulders and that the length allows comfortable sitting on the floor. Box pleats look smart but need ironing; a simpler A-line shape is easier for parents.
The skirt
A skirt with a tucked-in shirt is common from around the middle primary years. Styles include pleated, box-pleated, A-line and divided skirts.
Why schools choose it: It looks formal and is simple to coordinate with the boys’ uniform by using the same shirt and the same trouser fabric or check for the skirt.
What to watch for:
- Waistband. An elasticated back or side adjusters let the skirt grow with the student and reduce the need for mid-year replacements.
- Length. Agree a length in your uniform policy and give the supplier a measurement, not only a description such as “knee length”, because knee length varies by height.
- Pleats. Pleats need to be stitched or set well enough to survive washing. Ask how the pleats are finished and wash a sample before approving.
- Shorts underneath. Some schools specify matching shorts or allow them, which helps with play and PT days.
The salwar kameez set
A salwar set is a kameez (tunic) with salwar or straight pants, often with a dupatta or a shawl-style overlay in the school colour. Many schools in Kerala and across India use it for older girls, and some offer it as an option from the upper primary years.
Why schools choose it: It offers more coverage and freedom of movement than a skirt, many students and parents find it more comfortable, and it suits cultural preferences in many communities.
What to watch for: The dupatta is the item most often lost, crumpled or unsafe near lab burners and machinery. Some schools pin it, some use a shorter stitched version, and some drop it for practical lessons. Check the kameez length, side slit height and sleeve length against your policy, and choose a pant style with a comfortable waistband.
Comparing girls school uniform options
| Option | Typical age group | Main strengths | Main considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pinafore | Pre-primary to early primary | Easy to wear, grows with the child | Fastenings, strap fit, ironing of pleats |
| Skirt and shirt | Middle primary to senior | Formal look, matches boys’ shirts | Waistband adjustment, agreed length, pleat finish |
| Salwar set | Upper primary to senior | Coverage, movement, comfort | Dupatta handling, more pieces per set |
Offering a choice
More schools now let girls choose between a skirt, a salwar set and trousers, or allow trousers as an alternative for everyone. It can make students more comfortable and reduce complaints, but it does affect ordering.
If you offer a choice:
- Collect the choice along with the size, so each student’s order is clear.
- Keep fabric and colours the same across options, so students still look like one school.
- Expect the split between options to change from year to year, and keep a small buffer of each.
Our post on a comfortable and inclusive school uniform policy covers how to write these choices into a policy that parents understand.
Fabric and climate
In hot, humid weather, girls’ uniforms often feel warmer than boys’ because of layered pieces such as a pinafore over a shirt or a dupatta over a kameez. A lighter fabric for the pinafore or kameez, or a lighter shirt underneath, helps. Darker skirts and salwars hide marks from floor seating and play.
Whatever fabric you are considering, ask the supplier what it is, how it should be washed and whether colours hold up, and wash a sample at home before you sign off.
